John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to “leave town” until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep throated SAVE AMERICA ACT, the Budget, and the ever looming Debt Ceiling disaster, 1929! This is not hyperbole. This is a direct, documented description of what Democrats have already promised to do. Progressive caucus chairs signed a resolution pledging to kill the filibuster, pack the Supreme Court, and federalize elections the moment they take back power. Chris Murphy went on a podcast and confirmed it. Chuck Schumer’s allied groups are coordinating strategy around it. They are not bluffing. They have told you exactly what comes next if Republicans hand them the Senate in November.
And John Thune is planning to go on vacation August 10.
The Senate’s summer “state work period” runs from August 10 through September 11 — a full month away from Washington, away from the chamber, and away from the one vote that could secure American elections before the midterms. Trump has now publicly told Thune — at a Georgia rally last week and on Truth Social this morning — to cancel it. Mike Lee and Rick Scott are on board with staying. Thune hasn’t moved.
Here is the bottom line that every Republican senator needs to hear before they board their August flights. If Democrats win the Senate in November, the filibuster dies on day one. Whatever Thune is protecting by refusing to eliminate it will be eliminated by his opponents before Inauguration Day 2029. He is preserving a procedural rule that his enemies have already promised to destroy, at the cost of the most important election security legislation in a generation, with 100 days until the midterms that determine everything.
The SAVE America Act has 83% public support. Eighty-three percent. Seventy-two percent of Democrats support it. It passed the House. It is sitting in the Senate. And the Senate Majority Leader is planning to leave town for a month.
Trump called it correctly at the Georgia rally: call John Thune’s office. Tell him to pass the SAVE America Act. Tell him to stay in Washington. Tell him that protecting a Senate rule that Democrats have already promised to eliminate is not leadership — it is surrender dressed up as principle.
The ball is in Thune’s court. The clock is running. August 10 is two weeks away.
Do your job, Senator. The vacation can wait. American elections cannot.
