A leading Democrat said on Friday that his party will subject the country to yet another impeachment of President Donald Trump if they retake control of the House in the fall, in order to satisfy Democrats’ increasingly radical left-wing base.
Far-left Rep. Ro Khanna of California said during an appearance on MSNBC NOW that Democrats would definitely pursue impeachment of Trump if they regain control of the House of Representatives in the midterms.
Several congressional Democrats have introduced or attempted to introduce impeachment resolutions since Trump began his second term on Jan. 20, 2025, citing issues including immigration policy and U.S. military actions in Iran.
In an interview on “The Briefing” with guest host Ali Velshi, Khanna said he believes Trump’s actions could constitute potential violations of international law, as though that is what guides American foreign policy rather than the Constitution and U.S. statutes.
“Absolutely, he should be impeached now,” Khanna told Velshi. “I mean, he’s taken us into a disastrous war, threatening war crimes in Iran in terms of the knocking out [power] plants and knocking out electricity, and the Democrats will impeach him once we take back the House and should impeach him for all the things he’s done, and depending on the Senate, he may face conviction.”
It’s not a ‘war crime’ to destroy an enemy’s capabilities, and the fact is, Democrats have been supporting Iran with their rhetoric since the conflict began a month ago. Also, the U.S. has completely dominated Iran’s military capabilities, so the only ‘disaster’ here is being suffered by the Iranians.
On March 21, Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran via a post on Truth Social. He demanded that the Iranian regime stop attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that if they did not comply, the United States would target their power plants. Trump later announced that these strikes were on hold, citing the possibility of negotiations with the regime.
“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Time is running out — 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to GOD!”
The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route for oil, was closed by Iran in retaliation for the recent U.S.-Israeli attacks. The closure has unsettled the global energy market.
During his first term in office, Trump was impeached twice by the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives. The first impeachment was related to a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and the second was connected to the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol building. The Senate acquitted Trump after both impeachment trials.
In a town hall meeting in January, Democratic Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey told attendees that the party was prepared to impeach Trump again, which is a horrible thing to even suggest during a conflict.
“And the only thing that’s gonna remove him is the 25th Amendment, but that would require – no, no, wait a minute – that would require the vice president and members of the cabinet to move against him, but he’s hired a bunch of lackeys, so they’re not going to execute the 25th Amendment,” Coleman told attendees. “But I tell you what, if you elect Democrats to the Senate and to the House, he’ll get impeached. And that’s one way of getting rid of him.”
It should be noted that every president appoints or hires people loyal to him and his agenda, so the remark about “lackeys” is bombastic rhetoric. In any event, Trump has argued that the U.S. has been in a conflict with Iran for nearly 50 years, and that all U.S. presidents dating back to Bill Clinton have vowed never to allow Iran to possess a nuclear weapon or continue to threaten Americans.
